In October 2014, family, friends, and members of the philanthropic community were shocked and saddened to learn about Mark Woroby’s passing. Just 55, Mark lived a giving and generous life, leaving behind his beloved wife Elaine and countless others who also dearly loved him.
Mark was a good man, thorough and patient. He always had a story to share, and he remembered all the stories he heard. He was justifiably proud of his ability to connect people.
Mark served as president of The Gift Planning Group of Northeastern New York (GPGNNY). GPGNNY provides quality educational resources for the advancement of charitable giving through planned gifts.
Under Mark’s leadership, GPGNNY annually offered five programs per year designed to help development and planned giving professionals nurture meaningful and impactful donor relationships. Mark also strengthened GPGNNY’s relationship with Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, the national organization to which GPGNNY belongs.
Mark earned his C.F.P. and C.S.P.G. designations in financial planning. After working in pharmaceutical sales and for firms including the AYCO Company, Mark began his professional fundraising career at RPI. He was executive director of the Wildwood Foundation and most recently served as Director of Philanthropy at Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern New York.
A graduate of Mohawk High School and Siena College, Mark loved watching Siena basketball with his wife Elaine and vacationing in the Finger Lakes. He always made time to visit friends and family, often in the company of his dog Sofi.
GPGNNY board of directors will honor Mark’s memory annually by recognizing an accomplished local professional with an annual award first established in 2014. This award has been renamed the Mark Woroby Spirit of Philanthropy Award. The first award was presented by Mark himself to Garry Malone, owner of Gift Planning Resources, LLC. Garry is a seasoned planned giving leader who has devoted more than 10 years of exemplary service to GPGNNY’s Board of Directors and Program Committee. The second award was presented to Jackie Mahoney, Executive Vice President of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region.
GPGNNY also has established the Mark Woroby Memorial Fund to honor his legacy. Funds raised from friends like you will help GPGNNY advance gift planning education. Please contribute as generously as you can in memory of our wonderful leader and friend.
The Gift Planning Group of Northeastern New York is a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. Donations are tax deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law.
